We adore our home; love going back to it after a long tiring day. But what if you are made to live somewhere else, a place where you are deprived of your basic necessities, a place which is completely alien to you? Doesn’t sound a good idea, right? Similar is the case with your pet. Providing a habitat that makes him feel like home is highly essential so as to make him happy and healthy.

Red eye frog is leading the race for the most lovable pet and is found more in homes as compared to cats and dogs. The frog needs ample of space for himself. An all-glass large vivarium with spacious vertical room is recommended. Since they are arboreal, plenty of height space is required. The vivarium should be roofed with a screen so as to prevent the frogs from evading.

This pet do not need any specific light or heat emitter, they do well at room temperature. However, to be at the safer side, you should make sure that the tank temperature is within the range of 26C to 28C during day time and 20C to22C at night. This can be attained using an underneath heat mat controlled by thermostat. You should setup a low UV lamp to create a natural day and night cycle. Red eye frog needs substrate. The substrate should be used to sustain high level of humidity along with being easy to clean and opposed to the fungus growth. This coconut husk fiber, safe soil, cypress mulch, orchid bark, moist form rubber or moist paper towel with 2 to 5 inches depth can be used in the substrate for giving a natural look. However, the ideal choice is coconut husk fiber that is available in different forms. At the bottom of vivarium, aquarium gravel can be used for drainage purpose.

Red eyed frog habitat environment should have the high level of humidity all time, at about 70 is a must. A large shallow water dish should be there. You need to mist the vivarium on regular basis to maintain the moist habitat about twice a day. An automatic reptile misting system is recommended. There should be several perches and hiding places for red eyed tree frog. Hiding spots can be created using live plants or artificial plants with large, broad, sturdy and green leaves for sheltering and sleeping. These arboreal tree frogs require climbing places. Branchy sticks, driftwood, slabs of cork bark, vines, and bamboo poles are decors to be used to create comfortable and natural perches and climbing areas. Tank background should be covered by dark poster to make the frogs feel secure.

It’s very important to clean the vivarium as the red eyed tree frogs have sensitive skin. Make sure to inspect the vivarum daily. Dirty items should be removed and replaced to prevent mold from budding. Fresh water should be replaced daily. Every 2 weeks, the vivarium should be hygienic and sterilized using reptile safe disinfectant or amphibian safe cleaner. Rinse the vivarium thoroughly after disinfecting.
Have a great time seeing your red eye frog hopping around happily!

Nurture a Healthy Baby Bearded Dragon With These Simple to Follow Tips

The latest rage among the pet owners is to have possession of a bearded dragon. Many reptile pet owners have been constantly checking out the little bearded dragons because they are cute and fun to play with. However lagging of experiences on the care of these baby reptiles can cause life threatening risk.

For the first few months after the bearded dragons have born, you need to devote more care such as avoid too frequent handling to reduce the stress, small prey size, and more calcium intake. Even when the bearded dragon baby is at age of 8 weeks, they are considered hatching or very young. They are most likely prone to anxiety, and it would affect its growth and health. If you are chasing one for yourself, make sure that it is at least 8 weeks old, and take good care of the pet. There are numerous points to be considered while adopting baby bearded dragon which can help in making him a happy pet like:

Housing:

They do not require big enclosure size and ambience space. If the cage is too large, they may find it difficult chasing down and hunting for the prey. If the enclosure is too big, they may feel insecure living in it. Smaller enclosure will make them feel more secure. They do not require big enclosure. If the cage is too large, they may find it difficult chasing down and hunting for the prey and may feel insecure living in it. Smaller enclosure will make them feel more secure. Try to avoid place that is busy and high footage traffic, especially when there are children running around and may get a chance to hit the enclosure. The disturbances may always stress them up.

Feeding:

A baby bearded dragon feeding should be done more often as they need more fats and protein from the food for rapid growth. They should be fed atleast 2 to 3 times a day. The main concern in feeding baby bearded dragon is the food size, especially insects such as crickets. The proper food size should be 1/3 of the hatchling’s head and the length should be smaller than the distance between their eyes. Feeding hatchling with small prey is a must as large items can lead to paralysis and even death. Besides small crickets, small bearded dragons need greens, fruits and vegetables at this time as well. One of the feeding principles for baby bearded dragon is to offer them plenty of water. You may mist their head, cage wall, and decorations with water until they start to lap the water droplets.

Handling:

When it is the first try to hold them, they may resist, but approach them slowly. Try to pick them up from side instead of top. This will reduce the risk of being scared. Reach out the bottom of the body part, and support their body with another hand, let the body feel that it is standing firmly on your hands.

Feed Your Red Eyed Tree Frog With a Sumptuous Meal

Dogs, guinea pigs and cats have been the favorite pets till date. But the ritual is broken by red eyed tree frogs that are topping the charts of the most adored and preferred pet. A native to Southern Mexico, Central America and Northern Columbia, this amphibian usually has bright green color skin, blue or purple ribs with white side strips, ruby red eyes and orange toes. Red eyed tree frog is carnivorous and gobbles mostly insects.

Red eyed tree frogs can always be an exceptional pet. They are medium sized frog, and known as Agalychnis callidryas. With only nominal care is needed, they are doing well, well suggested for beginner pet frog owners. This tropical amphibian is mostly captive bred, easy on the pocket and can be easily found in pet shops and breeders. Being carnivorous and insectivorous, they generally consume soft-bodied invertebrates. The most common and commercially available food is crickets. If you complement your tree frogs with other insects such as worms, flies, moths or grasshoppers, you would have a cheerful tree frog.

An adult red eyed tree frog should be fed for almost 5-6 times every two to three days. Juvenile frogs are fed on daily basis as they have larger appetite. Crickets are the most acceptable for the tree frogs during all life stages. Remember to feed your crickets with assorted fruits, vegetables or cricket food before 12 hours feeding them to your tree frogs. The gut loaded or dusted crickets will pass the nutrient to the frogs. Red eyed tree frogs like eat most of the live insects. Meal worms, wax worms, or silk worms can be used as supplement to crickets. Place these worms into feeding dish to avoid burrowing into the substrate. Tree frogs also eat other insects like fruit flies, curly flies, house flies, spiders, grasshoppers and moths. Gut loaded these insects with reptile supplements before feeding them to your red eyed tree frogs.

Red eyed tree frogs need water. A dish of shallow fresh water should be provided all time. Make sure the water is chlorine free. You use the bottled spring water or treat the tap water with anti-chlorine. Most of the times red eyed tree frogs do not drink water directly, but they like to soak in the clean water for rehydration. Water should be replaced every day to avoid ammonia and bacteria from building up in the water. If budget allows, try to setup a reptile misting system that will provide appropriate humidity to the cage and frogs. Frogs will drink from the water accumulated on the plants resulting from the misting as well.

Whether in its natural habitat or in captivity, red eyed tree frog food varies little. They are stealth hunters and are fun to watch when feeding. When feeding in captivity, ensure that they receive the proper amount of food at the frequency they require. During the winter season, cricket might be hard to source. It’s suggested that you can breed your own crickets to ensure full supply of various size of the insect all year long. Normally own-bred crickets are clean and out of bacteria. This can make sure that you have healthy tree frogs food supplies all time.
Keep your pet healthy and watch it hopping from one branch to another!

Local Aquarium Stores for Information and Advice

I have read many blogs, forum posts (including Yahoo answers), and infomercial articles that trash local fish (pet) stores as a source of Aquarium information and help. This in my opinion is unfair as there are many dedicated stores and employees who love the hobby and really want to see the best for your aquarium (or pond).

Even stores such as PetsMart or PetsCo which are often noted for poor quality advice often will have an employee who really knows his or hers 'stuff' (although these good employees will often not stay long). This said, if you have recieved good service and advice, your local aquarium store is worth supporting over the large chains (especially Walmart)

One should ask around when seeking a good store, get to know the owners and/or the employees. Also keep in mind that everyone makes mistakes and just because you may have gotten one bad fish or some bad advice does not mean you should right off that particular store.

You want to look for a store that is open minded and not dogmatic on everything they say, always open to new ideas. Also be careful of stores that may push only one manufacturer's line of product rather than carrying the best of all manufacturers. This of coarse does not prove a bad store either as they may have purchasing restrictions or other factors that go into this. However I have personally tried to resist purchasing an entire manufacturers line just to get better discounts (many companies from Hagen to Tetra offer these discounts either direct or through distributors such as Central Garden and Pet). I mentioned Hagen and Tetra as two expamples of companies that make some good products (more so Hagen), but also some 'dogs' too.

I personally have never tried to be everything to everyone in my previous LFS and Aquarium Maintenance company or my current Online Aquarium Products store, I have always tried to sell what I personally use and believe in and have often suggested DIY filters, lighting and similar. In my Aquarium & pond resource article I often make many suggestions such as for marine applications of products or methods of I have nothing to sell. There are many good LFS that are just the same and will honestly tell you when they cannot help your and send you in the right direction to those who can.

Many larger metropolitan areas have many good stores to choose from, while unfortunately many smaller communities (such as Grants Pass where I now live) often may have just one or two stores and in my community they are both very poor Aquarium stores with poor advice and out of date low quality supplies.

Back in the San Gabriel Valley of Los Angeles County (where I was in business for 28 years) there are more choices (such as Pasadena Tropical Fish). I am sure many other larger communities are the same and maybe some smaller ones where the 'old boy network' is not quite so strong have excellent Aquarium Stores as well. <!--Article Source: Their abdomens are folded under their cephalothroax (their major body part). Examples of true crabs are Fiddler (the most popular among aquarists) and Horseshoe. Untrue crabs keep their bodies in a seashell. They are categorized with true crabs in pet stores because they are short crustaceans with hard exoskeletons and ten legs.

Crabs are great for aquariums. They are scavengers and will eat organic matter such as decaying plants, dead fish, or decaying food. Because they walk and climb but do not swim, they also stir up substrate. Like land dwelling plants, underwater plants also need their soil or gavel cultivated. Having crabs in your tank will cultivate your aquarium's greenery and help it grow. The most significant benefit crabs have to offer is probably their appetite for algae. If you have an algae problem, get a crab or two to keep it in check. These critters, as well as snails, make meals out of the stuff. Keep in mind nothing is a substitution for maintaining the aquarium yourself.

Another benefit of freshwater crabs is the fun behavior they display! These guys will climb, scuttle and hide. If you stick any kind of decoration in your tank, they will not hesitate to explore every inch of it. They will even climb up the side of tanks and try to escape if they find a hole in the hood! Intriguing behavior is perhaps why Fiddle crabs are one of the most popular. They are nocturnal and scuttle around quite a bit. The males are interesting in appearance because they have one small claw and the other one is supersized! Adding crabs to your aquarium will make it much more unique.

Bear in mind that crabs are slightly higher maintenance than some fish. Their water has to be kept at 70-82 degrees Fahrenheit. Crabs assist in keeping water clean, probably because they cannot live in it themselves if it gets too dirty. Make sure your crabs are living in clean water and test it often. Not all crabs can live in water forever. Most need to visit dry land. You can give them the land by putting a mound of gravel in your tank. Have it sit above the water and slope underwater.

Crabs crave a varied diet. Switch up their feed between flakes, frozen, and live food. They will still eat snacks of dead fish and feces in between meals! Lastly, think of the fish already in your tank. Some fish like to eat crabs, and crabs will eat tiny, bottom-dwelling fish. It does not do an aquarium any good if its inhabitants eat each other! Do some careful research before accidentally turning your aquarium into an underwater version of 'Lord of the Flies'.
Article Source: http://EzineArticles.com/?expert=Garry-Ian_Macdonald

The Benefits of Fish Tank Filters For Home Aquariums

Taking care of fish as pets can be a full-time job for people at home. While some have all of the knowledge required to take care of them, there are many others who actually do not and end up with fish dying on a regular basis. Well, one of the main things you need to learn about when it comes to caring your fish is fish tank filters, their purpose and their uses. Once you learn about them, you stand a good chance of having a lower mortality rate for your fish.

Basically, fish tank filters have two main purposes when used in both freshwater and saltwater aquariums:

* They remove physical and soluble chemical waste products from the tank or aquarium, thereby making maintenance a simpler process
* They are used to support the life of fish and other living species in the tank, which is usually a small area with closed volumes of water when compared to the natural environment of the most fish

As you can see, the purpose and use are very valid and having aquarium filters would definitely help to make the care process easier for you.

Now, let us consider fish tank filters from the biological, chemical and mechanical standpoints to see just how beneficial they are to your pet fish.

From the biological standpoint, a tank filter is actually a breeding ground for two main types of bacteria. Hearing bacteria might allow you to think that it's something bad, but it's actually not. The type of bacteria that are cultured by filters specifically work on chemicals that are produced from fish waste. The first bacterium actually breaks down the poisonous ammonia that fish culture and turns them into nitrites. With the second type of bacterium, the nitrites are broken down into nitrates which are even less harmful.

From the chemical standpoint, some tank filters allow you to add active carbon in the form of sheets, crystal or balls. The purpose of this chemical product is to remove medication and traces of metal from the water. And from the mechanical standpoint, filters are also widely used to expel larger particles of debris from the water. All three aspects of aquarium filters make it obvious that the main purpose of a filter is to protect the life of your fish and other species in the tank.

If you never considered them before, you should consider fish tank filters now. Not only will it make life easier for you in terms of maintaining your tank, but it will also make it easier for your fish as they strive to survive.

There are a variety of Fish Tank Filters to choose from. And selecting the right one for your Fish Tank Aquarium will have immediate and beneficial results.

Article Source: http://EzineArticles.com/?expert=Peter_Kaestner

Tips on Setting Up Your First Fish Tank

Let's take a splash into the world of fish. Studies show there is a calming effect on watching fish. Having a fish tank relives stress, overall improving ones health. This is why you find many fish tanks in doctors offices. Don't forget the entertainment that fish provide. All around, fish make great pets.

First thing before purchasing a tank is to know where you are going to put it. Remember three main things. First is stability. Is it going to have its own stand or be on a table? This is very important especially if you have pets or children. Flipping fish and water all over the floor because of an unstable table is not something you want to experience.

Second, fish tanks don't do well in a place where there is an abundant amount of sun because algae will form. A green fish tank is not pretty sight. Don't place your fish tank near heat, air conditioning or exterior doors because you will have problems maintaining constant water temperature. Don't forget that you will need electricity. Do not use extension cords, you need an outlet less then three feet away. Trust me, its a pain to set the whole tank up and realize there is no outlet near by.

Okay, now you are ready to purchase a tank. What type of fish do you want? Tropical fish or cold water fish. Tropical fish need a heater in the tank to keep the temperature between 74-78 degrees Fahrenheit. There are basic two types of tanks, glass or acrylic. Personally, I find acrylic much easier due to the fact that it is a lot lighter and acrylic won't crack.

One mistake to avoid is purchasing the fish tank, all accessories, and the fish all at once. Buy only the fish tank and accessories because the environment for the fish has to be established first. You need to place the water in the fish tank 24 hours ahead of time and let it acclimate to room temperature. Letting it stand also de-chlorinates the water. You can purchase drops of sodium thiosulfate to de-chlorinate the water but that does not allow the water to reach room temperature. My advise is skip as many chemicals as possible and wait the 24 hour time period.

Don't forget gravel, rock and decorations. You can get plastic plants or live plants. I personally like live plants because most fish like to eat the plants. Also, make sure you have extra carbon filters on hand.

Now you are ready to purchase fish. A good fish store will be able to assist you on how many fish to buy for your size tank. While you are there don't forget the fish food. Your choices are flake food or pellets. I have found that pellets keep the tank much cleaner. Remember only to feed the fish what they can eat in a few minutes.

You think fish can't jump? Think again! Make sure your aquarium comes with a hood. This is very important because it keeps little hands from putting things in the fish tank. The hood has a lighting fixture that usually comes with a incandescent bulb. I replaced mine with a 13w compact fluorescent light bulb because of heat build up and the possibility of getting burned. I usually keep my fish tank light on when feeding the fish so I can watch their strange antics.

Your next step? To take what you've just learned and go to the pet store and purchase a tank.

Gary Nave helps consumers choose the right fish tank for their needs.

Article Source: http://EzineArticles.com/?expert=Gary_Nave

How to Change Water in a Fish Tank

One of the biggest mistakes fish owners make is changing all of the tank's water. This can be devastating as bacterial levels can be wiped out. Bacterial is essential to breakdown fish poop from becoming toxic. The best solution is dilution!

1. Fill a bucket with tap water that will be used to replace the water in the fish tank. Prepare this a day in advance. The general rule is to take out about 20 percent of the tank's water. The most common tank size is 40 gallons--in that case about 8 gallons should be removed. This can be lowered to 5 gallons to make it easier, since buckets usually hold 5 gallons.
 2. Add tap water conditioner into the bucket. Use the amount of water condition as directed on the container. A common brand you'll find at most pet stores is Tap Water Conditioner by Aquarium Pharmaceuticals. Or, if you have a reverse osmosis dionized (RO/DI) water filter, it can be used without adding water conditioner.
 3. Place the bucket and tubing next to the aquarium in preparation for a water change.
 4. Turn off all electricity to avoid any dangers. Heaters can break if exposed to excessive air as it will try to heat the room's temperature. Filters can go dry if water levels go below the suction tubing.
5. Place one end of the tubing into the fish tank and begin a suction by sucking on the other end of the tube like you would a straw. Make sure your end is below the end in the tank so that gravity pulls down the water into the bucket. Be sure to watch the water move down the tubing as you do not want to drink any of your fish's poop. Before it gets to your mouth, empty the water into a second bucket.
 6. Remove any solid wastes inside the fish tank by gently siphoning the gravel to pick any settled debris.
 7. When the bucket is almost full remove the tubing from the fish tank to break the siphon.
 8. After removing the targeted amount of water, add the prepared water into the tank.
 9. Plug any electrical equipment that was unplugged in Step 4.
Source : http://www.ehow.com/how_2266446_set-up-fish-tank.html

Set Up a Fish Tank

Having a fish tank and watching the fish swim around helps you relax and lower your blood pressure, and it's a good way to teach your child about responsibility. These steps will help you set up a fish tank you will be proud of.

1.Decide on the type of fish you want. Different kinds of fish (fresh water fish versus salt water fish) require different kinds of equipment. Fresh water fish are easier to care for whereas salt water fish have much more color to them and are harder to care for.
2.Visit the pet store to purchase all the equipment you will need to set up a fish tank. Make a list of everything you will need to set up a fish tank.
3.Set up the fish tank. Place the fish tank in a good location. Add the filter, the heater, the gravel, the plants, the driftwood or decorations, the rocks and the water. Adjust the heater until the water temperature reaches a temperature between 75 to 78 degrees. Place the top of the fish tank on the tank.
4. Let your fish tank set for at least a week before adding any fish. This will allow time for you to be sure the water temperature is set correctly, the filter is working correctly and there are no leaks in the fish tank. This will also allow the bacteria to start building a bacteria base.
5. Select your fish. Keep in mind when picking out your fish, that you need to purchase fish that get along with each other. Also, you do not want to buy too many fish. Purchase fish that are hearty, inexpensive, relatively small and ones that you want to watch for a long period of time.
6. Maintain your fish tank. Feed your fish on a daily basis, while checking the filter and heater twice a week.
